Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration Consultation session at CAF - posted 03.9.2010 area: NI dates: 23 September, 12noon
The Programme for Cohesion, Sharing and Integration (CSI) consultation was launched some weeks ago by the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister (OFMDFM) and will continue until 29 October 2010.
The aim of the document is to provide a policy framework for 'a strong community where everyone, regardless of race, colour, religious or political opinion, age, gender, disability or sexual orientation can live, work and socialise in a context of fairness, equality, rights, responsibilities and respect'.
It will be important to make a strong case for the value of community arts in peace building work; in creating a safe space for difficult conversations; in challenging homophobia, racism, sectarianism and other forms of discrimination and in providing a powerful tool to create a more inclusive society. Funding will be attached to this policy which all government departments will be required to deliver on.
The policy will have huge implications for public funding for the coming decade. CSI is a very important piece of legislation and it is crucial that community arts are recognised as a delivery mechanism. This can only happen with a strong response from the community arts sector.
CAF will be hosting a consultation session on 23rd September 2010 between 10.00 am and 12.00 pm at CAF's offices on 15 Church Street, Belfast, BT1 1PG. For more information or to register contact Heather Floyd at: heather@caf.ie

Volunteer Now Research - looking to hear from Older Volunteers - posted 14.8.2010 area: NI
Volunteer Now's Unlocking Potential Project in conjunction with the University of Ulster is carrying out an exciting new study which will measure the impact of volunteering on the health of the 50+ age group.
Older people are hugely important to volunteering in Northern Ireland. They bring a wealth of skills and life experiences to the causes which they support. There are approximately 99,000* volunteers aged 50 or over in Northern Ireland, contributing the equivalent of £202^ million pounds a year to our economy.
This huge resource goes largely unmentioned but as older people are becoming an increasing proportion of the Northern Ireland population, they must also become an increasing proportion of the volunteer base, if volunteering is to flourish.
They would like to recruit as many volunteers who are 50 and over as possible on to the study. It doesn't matter how long you have been volunteering, who you volunteer with or what you do, they want to hear from you! The research will involve completing four questionnaires over an 18 month period. They would also like to hear from organisations that involve volunteers and would like to support the study.
More information & questionnaires contact: Christine Irvine - christine.irvine@volunteernow.co.uk or 028 9081 8332.
Arts & Health website launched - posted 14.8.2010
There is now an overwhelming body of evidence demonstrating that participation in the arts and access to a range of arts opportunities can dramatically improve health outcomes and increase wellbeing. By supplementing medicine and care, the arts can improve the health of people who experience mental or physical health problems. Engaging in the arts can promote prevention of disease and build wellbeing. The arts can improve healthcare environments and benefit staff retention and professional development.
This new website has been compiled by the London Arts in Health Forum working with other partners in the field of arts in health. These organisations are working together as the National Forum for Arts in Health – an association of organisations looking to develop the role of the arts in improving wellbeing in England.
